UPLIFT Haiti to host March 27 benefit concert

March 13, 2010

UPLIFT Haiti invites the public to a fundraising concert in Wheaton, Md., on March 27 to support volunteer medical and educational projects in Haiti.

The concert, at Wheaton Recreation Center (March 27, 6:00 to 10:00 p.m.), will feature local musicians including SR111 (classic rock), Angel Row (rock), Darrin Carter (R&B soul), Paul Miller & Friends (classic rock), and Emily Reid (Celtic harpist).

The fundraiser will also feature a silent auction and the “Sweet Treat Café,” which will serve Haitian coffee, tea, punch and a variety of deserts.

The nonprofit is requesting donations of $15 for admission to the concert and “Sweet Treat Café.”

Volunteers with UPLIFT Haiti carry out medical clinics, training programs and other projects proposed by--and in partnership with--communities in Haiti.  The “UPLIFT” in the group’s name stands for “Uniting People to Learn, Inspire and Form Together.”

The most recent volunteer project was a “train the trainer” program at a culinary school in Les Cayes, Haiti, around the time of the devastating January 12 earthquake. After the quake, the team of five volunteers completed the culinary-school program and stayed in Les Cayes, about 100 miles west of Port-au-Prince, to assist refugees.

Upcoming planned projects of UPLIFT Haiti include:

  • Conduct medical clinics in two Haitian towns, La Colline and L’Etang Rey, and

  • Help a citizen organization set up computer and internet access in their remote mountain community.

Wheaton Recreation Center is located at 11711 Georgia Ave.
