Two not-so-simple questions

—Christian Nestor

1.
As we flew over Haiti, I stared down, astounded at the sight, asking myself, “How could a country once called ‘The Pearl of the Antilles’ end like this, with mountainsides white as sand, barren from all of the years of deforestation?”

2.
Descending into the Toussaint L’Ouverture Airport, I could see the shacks. I reminded myself that these great people live in such bad conditions, yet they stay faithful and hopeful in spirit.  How do they do it?
